Later that evening, Emma sat with Andy once again at the small table in the captain’s cabin. While he ate the supper she’d brought him, Emma suggested that they make a list of his favorite snacks.

“What for?” Andy asked after swallowing a mouthful of chicken.

“Sooner or later you’re going to get tired of eating canned food. I’ll be going to Windland next Saturday, so I can pick up some snacks and anything else you might need,” Emma explained. Then she got some paper and a pen from the rolltop desk. After returning to her seat at the table, she began writing down everything Andy mentioned.

“I’ll give you the money I have left,” Andy told her when she had finished the list. “Just get what you can with that.”

“Okay,” Emma answered noncommittally. She would take Andy’s money, but she wouldn’t spend it unless she had to.

“Oh, we’ll need more flashlight batteries,” Andy said, adding to the list. “And I’ve got an idea for an early warning system that I think will work. Do you think you can get me some snappers?” At Emma’s look of confusion, Andy went on to explain. “You know. They’re the little fireworks people buy for kids. You throw them down or step on them and they make a loud pop.”

Emma’s frown disappeared. “I know what you’re talking about now. We call them poppers.”

“I thought I could put a bunch in the chapel passage. Then when Lord Dinswood comes, he’ll step on them and I’ll hear the bangs.”

“Andy, that’s pure genius! The walls of the passage should act as a natural echo chamber. The sound of the poppers exploding should be plenty loud.”

“That’s what I thought,” Andy said, nodding. “They aren’t exactly high tech, but they’re cheap.”

“I should be able to find some. There’s a general store in Windland that has practically everything.”

Emma sat back for a moment and shook her head as she looked at Andy. She was just beginning to get an inkling of how smart he was.

Seeing her look, Andy asked, “What?”

“You’re pretty amazing. You know that?”

“Aw shucks,” Andy teased. Although he was making light of Emma’s comment, he was secretly pleased. It had been a long time since anyone had said anything nice about him. Andy’s expression sobered as a thought occurred to him. “You know, Emma, I really appreciate you bringing me to this ship. I promise I’ll take good care of everything.”

“I know that Andy,” Emma replied. “Otherwise I never would have brought you here.”

“How did you know you could trust me?” Andy asked, furrowing his brows. “I could have been a thug or psycho for all you knew.”

“Well, after you risked your life to save mine, I was pretty sure I could trust you,” Emma answered after a moment. “And you helped me that day I was lost in the corn maze. A thug wouldn’t have done that. You know I prayed for help that day, and I think God sent me an angel in the form of you.”

“I’m no angel,” Andy replied quickly.
